HOM: Nine albums in 15 years is a very good background, what do you do to keep fresh?
We get most of our inspiration from radio music, not metal music. I guess that’s what keeps us fresh!
HOM: “The Prestige” means the debut of your new guitar player Franz, how did he join the band? His previous project Volbeat was having really good critics and finding his place in the overcrowded European scene. Has he adapted well?
Yeah he adapted very well. He is an old friend of ours and always came to party at our shows in Copenhagen in the past. He already knew all our songs so it was easy for him to get in.
HOM: Since we are talking about guitars, I have to congratulate you for the great job your guitar players have done. The solos have amazed me!
Thanks a lot! I try my best!
HOM: How is the process of composition and recording of an Illdisposed album?
I wrote all the songs myself. Most of them I wrote while I was sitting in the train between Denmark and Germany. I was travelling a lot by train last year so I had plenty of time to write music there. I have a studio at home where I recorded all songs with a drum machine. Then I gave the other guys a cd so they could hear the songs. Only Bo, Thomas and I recorded the album. I didn’t have time to teach Jonas the songs before we entered the studio and Franz didn’t join the band until after we finished recording. So I recorded all guitars and bass on the album as well!
HOM: What does the band offer in its lyrics? And in the new “The Prestige”?
The lyrics are not typical death metal lyrics. They deal with personal experiences such as living in a relationship where you are cheating and lying to your girlfriend.
HOM. The last three albums have been produced by Ziggy (Peter Siegfredsen). What does he offer that such important people like Tommy Hansen or Jan Borsing don’t do?
Ziggy has the same kind of humour like we do. And he has known us for more than 10 years. We can be a bit difficult to work with for people who don’t know us. That’s the only reason.
HOM: With the arrival of the new millennium, your line-up changed completely. What happened on those years?
Well, we’re getting older and the band isn’t first priority for everybody anymore. When you get kids you have to be able to support them 100% so sometimes you have to choose a job that gives you money instead of a crappy metal band that doesn’t give you anything. Unfortunately the metal business sucks but that’s life!
HOM: You have always been considered a brutal band, but in your last albums, included “The Prestige”, you seem to be very comfortable with that kind of death at half tempo, very melodic. Have the changes in your line-up been the cause of this “softness” or it is just a logical evolution?
It’s just a normal evolution. We develop as musicians and we also get older and start listening to softer music hehe.
HOM: Looking back at the past, are you in the place you dreamt to be? Do you think you have left something on the way?
I already experienced more than I could ever dream of, so if I die tomorrow I would die happy!
HOM: One of your identity signs is the vocal treatment Bo gives to the songs with his multiple effects. Other bands usually use them in some moments, is there any reason why Illdisposed use these effects constantly?
Bo doesn’t use effects! Sometimes he sings a deep and a high voice on top of each other, that’s all!
HOM: It seems that nowadays it is very fashionable that all the bands have a dvd published. Will we have to wait much time to enjoy yours?
We have a very good quality bootleg DVD for sale. You can buy it at our shows and from some webshops. It will also be released as a bonus DVD for the re-release of our 1997 album “There’s something rotten… in the state of Denmark”. It will be released this year!
HOM: What is the reason why you have left roadrunner? Your two previous albums were released with them, why did you sign with AFM?
We simply didn’t sell enough for Roadrunner. They wanted us to sell minimum 100.000 copies of each album. And the fact that we cancelled a huge European tour with Vader in 2006 wasn’t really something they liked. We signed with AFM because they promised us a priority release and had lots of good ideas for us.
HOM: The first dates of your new tour are very concentrated in Central Europe Are there more dates and places fixed? Will we have the opportunity of seeing you in Spain?
We’re looking at festival offers at the moment. We just confirmed “With Full Force”, a very good festival in Germany. But we didn’t get any offers from Spain yet. We played a festival in Spain last year and it was great, so I hope we get the chance to go there again this year.
HOM: If you had the opportunity of setting up your own festival, which bands would you like to have by your side?
Forbidden who just reformed. I always loved that band. And Dream Theater I would also like to see live, never saw them.
HOM: The danish scene is now full of great bands dedicated to the extreme metal. How do you see this boom from the inside?
The Danish scene has been growing and growing the past years and is pretty good now. Before it was Sweden who had the leading scene in Europe but they kind of fell behind now.
HOM: What about the death metal scene? Will it survive to the push of metalcore?
Metalcore never made it in Denmark. It was out before it even made it in. I think the metalcore is on it’s way out everywhere.
HOM: Bo shares the vocal tasks with your mates Panzerchrist. How do you take this?
Bo got kicked out of Panzerchrist. But he never cared about that band anyway.
HOM: Apart from Bo, does any other member have a parallel project?
No
HOM: Well, nothing else to ask you so far, anything you want to add?
Yeah, check out our new album. And hopefully see you on tour in Spain this year!
HOM: Thanks for your time, it’s been a pleasure. See you!
